John Selk

John M Selk was born and raised in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and graduated from Cedar Rapids Prairie in 1985.  During high school John worked in the family business, Vlcko, Vlcko, and Selk Bookkeeping and Tax Preparation.

John received a B.S. degree in Education from the University of Missouri, he moved to Arizona to pursue a teaching career, but went into the golf industry instead. He spent the next 22 years managing facilities throughout the country.

In 2010, John married Kenzie, and in 2011 they celebrated the birth of their first son, Gabriel. In 2013 they were once again blessed with the birth of their second son, Michael. In 2017 they welcomed their third son, Nathaniel.

In 2012 John discussed returning to the family tax business with his father, Jack Selk.  John joined Selk Dawson Tax Services in 2013.  His plan was to work side by side with his father which he did for 8 years until Jack’s passing in 2020. He will continue to provide the quality and personalized services the family business has been built on.

Mike Dawson

Michael A Dawson was born and raised in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He graduated from Regis Catholic High School in 1977. He then went on to Kirkwood Community College and received an A.A. degree in Pre-Business in 1979. In 1984 Mike married his wife, Laura, and had two children, Sarah and Ryan. He has two wonderful granddaughters that he loves spending time with.

For 15 years, Mike owned and operated a small group of restaurants in Cedar Rapids, Hiawatha, and Iowa City. His years of experience owning and operating small businesses offers a unique perspective for our clients.

Mike has volunteered for the Cedar Rapids Community Schools in many capacities from President, Vice President and Treasurer of the PTA’s at Truman Elementary and Taft Middle School. To President and Vice President of The Band of Blue Parents Association at Jefferson High School. 

He has served on many Cedar Rapids School District Committees starting in 1996 with the Facilities Studies Committee, which was the start of the process to identify the needed improvements to the district's schools. He continued to work with the School District to serve on multiple oversight committees. He currently is the Chairperson for the Master Facilities Plan Oversight Committee, which has been charged with overseeing the intended use of the "SAVE" sales tax receipts.

Mike joined Jack Selk at the firm in October 2007. Mike shares the values and work ethic that the firm has built it's reputation on.

Ryan Dawson

Ryan M Dawson was born and raised in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 2007. After high school he received a B.S. degree in Business Administration and Economics from the University of Northern Iowa in 2011. After college he was a manager for Von Maur in both Iowa and Illinois. 

In 2014 Ryan moved back from Illinois and started working for Selk Dawson. He wished to join his father, Mike, in the tax business. Ryan runs a company of his own and has experience with rental properties. He enjoys playing video games, throwing darts, signing karaoke, and playing Euchre with his friends in his free time.

Rachel Fell

Rachel A Fell was born in Manchester, Iowa. She graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 2009. After high school, Rachel worked at La Cantina Bar and Grill for eight years. While there, she gained extensive customer service experience. While working in the restaurant industry she graduated from Kirkwood Community College with an A.A. in Applied Science.

In 2017, Rachel and her fiancé, Mike, were blessed with a beautiful baby girl, Kaci. Kaci became a big sister in 2019 when her sister, Kamryn was born. In Rachel’s free time she loves to travel, run, and hangout with family!

​

She began auditing taxes in 2013 at Selk Dawson Tax Services. In 2015 she expanded to the financial side for Selk Dawson. The 2020 Tax Season was her first season preparing taxes. Rachel is looking forward to meeting everyone she worked with over the phone in person for the 2021 Tax Season.

Jack Selk (11/27/1946-12/25/2020)

Jackson T Selk was born and raised in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1965. He went on to receive a B.S. degree in Psychology from the University of Iowa and a M.S. degree in Counseling from Iowa State University. He has two happily married sons, John and Jason. He has been blessed with two beautiful granddaughters and four handsome grandsons.

Jack started his income tax business in 1970 shortly after returning from the service, with time in Viet Nam. He had 50 years in the income tax business.

​

In 2003, Jack formed the Acorn Group, LLC that offers full financial services coupled with the income tax business. The group offers investment and retirement planning, grounded with a strong base in income tax law.
